The offshore wind buildout has created a crewing market that barely existed fifteen years ago, and it is hiring from the same pool that merchant shipping draws on. Every crewing manager serving North Sea and Baltic projects will tell you the same thing in an unguarded moment: the wind sector's bottleneck is not turbines or vessels, it is people with the right combination of certificates, seatime, and willingness to work in a sector that behaves more like offshore energy than like shipping. For merchant mariners, that bottleneck is an opportunity, and it is wider than most realize.

The fleet and what each vessel type needs

The sector crews four broad vessel families, each with a distinct manning profile:

  • Crew transfer vessels (CTV): small, fast aluminium cats running technicians to turbines daily. Skippers need small-vessel handling of a high order, and deckhands are often expected to be comfortable assisting technicians alongside boat-landing work.
  • Service operation vessels (SOV): the walk-to-work motherships holding station on DP for weeks while technicians cross a motion-compensated gangway. These are crewed like compact offshore vessels: masters, DP operators, engineers, and hotel support for the embarked technician party.
  • Commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV): the larger commissioning variants supporting construction-phase arrays, with correspondingly larger DP and marine crews.
  • Wind turbine installation vessels (WTIV): jack-up heavy-lift ships whose marine crews handle jack-up operations, heavy lift, and DP during transit and positioning.

Which merchant skills transfer

The transferable core is real. Bridge watchkeeping discipline, passage planning, colregs judgement in congested waters, and engine room practice on medium-speed diesel plants all carry directly. The gaps are specific and trainable:

  • Dynamic positioning: the defining skill on SOVs and CSOVs. The Nautical Institute DP training pathway, from induction course through supervised DP time to certification, is the established route, and officers with tanker or offshore supply DP time are already most of the way there.
  • Small vessel handling: CTV skippers are made from workboat, pilot boat, and fast craft backgrounds more often than from deep-sea bridge teams, but a chief officer with genuine boat handling confidence crosses over well.
  • GWO training: the Global Wind Organisation safety standards are mandatory for anyone working on or around turbines. Basic safety training covers working at height, sea survival, first aid, fire awareness, and manual handling. Mariners staying purely on the marine crew may need only parts of the stack, but holding the full basic package widens the roles available.
  • Walk-to-work familiarity: gangway operations and the marine side of technician transfer have their own procedures, normally learned in rank.

Pay, rotation, and the honest trade-offs

The economics differ from deep-sea patterns in ways that attract some officers and repel others. Rotations are typically equal-time, often on four-to-six-week cycles for SOVs, with CTV work running to daily or weekly patterns from home ports. Pay for DP-qualified SOV officers is competitive with offshore support norms, and the near-shore pattern means leave is real leave. The trade-offs: day-rate rather than monthly structures are common, national cabotage and local-content rules can shape who is eligible for which projects, and the career ladder inside the sector is shorter than the merchant path from cadet to master.

Making the move

The officers who transition successfully treat it as a two-contract project. The first contract buys sector exposure, often in a rank slightly below their merchant seniority, and funds the GWO and DP top-ups. The second contract is where the sector premium arrives, because an SOV chief officer with one completed project is a known quantity in a market that runs on shortlists and reputation. The deepest demand sits at DPO and SOV master level and in the engine room for officers comfortable with diesel-electric plants and DP power management. Merchant seniority does not transfer automatically; competence plus one proven project does.
