The newbuild orderbook tells the story plainly: a large and growing share of tonnage being delivered over the next several years is dual-fuel, burning LNG or methanol alongside conventional fuel oil, with ammonia-capable designs moving from concept to contract. For crewing desks this is no longer a niche manning problem. The engineer officers who hold IGF Code endorsements and, more importantly, documented sea time on gas-fuelled machinery are in structurally short supply, and the shortfall is hitting exactly at senior ranks where a mistake is most expensive. This article breaks down what operators actually ask for when they crew a dual-fuel newbuild: the difference between basic and advanced IGF training under STCW, why ME-GI and X-DF platform familiarity now appears in job specifications, how owners build a core team ahead of delivery, and what chief and second engineers without gas experience can do in the next twelve months to make themselves credible candidates. The premium for dual-fuel competence is real but unevenly distributed. Officers who understand how the demand curve is forming, and who sequence their training and seatime accordingly, will be the ones who capture it rather than watch it pass to better-prepared colleagues.
Walk into any crewing department serving a container line, gas carrier pool, or car carrier operator today and the conversation about senior engine officers eventually lands on the same point: there are not enough engineers with genuine dual-fuel experience to match the delivery schedule. The orderbook has moved faster than the training pipeline. Every ME-GI and X-DF installation that rolls out of a shipyard needs not one engineer who understands it, but a full watchkeeping complement plus shore superintendence who can support it.
What the demand actually looks like from the desk
The requests that arrive from owners have changed in character over the past few years. Five years ago a gas-experienced engineer request meant an LNG carrier billet, filled from a relatively stable pool of specialists. Today the same request arrives attached to a 15,000 TEU container ship, a pure car and truck carrier, or a methanol-fuelled tanker, and the pool has not grown at the same pace.
Typical specifications now combine several layers of requirement:
- STCW IGF Code training at basic or advanced level, with advanced expected for senior officers directly responsible for the fuel system
- Documented sea time on gas-fuelled or low-flashpoint-fuelled machinery, usually specified in months and sometimes in voyages on a specific engine type
- Familiarity with a named platform, most often the MAN ME-GI family or the WinGD X-DF family, because charterers and owners treat platform experience as meaningfully different
- For LNG-fuelled tonnage, frequently prior exposure to bunkering operations, since fuel handling incidents concentrate at bunkering
The IGF Code distinction matters in practice. Basic IGF training is the entry ticket for any officer on a ship covered by the Code. Advanced IGF training is what an owner looks for in a chief engineer or second engineer who will hold direct responsibility for the fuel gas supply system. An officer holding only the basic certificate can serve on dual-fuel tonnage, but is rarely the answer to a newbuild delivery requirement at senior rank.
Why the premium exists and where it concentrates
The wage premium for dual-fuel experience is real, but it is not uniform, and officers should understand its shape before negotiating. The premium concentrates at chief engineer and second engineer level, on newbuild delivery teams and on the first contracts after delivery when the owner is still bedding down procedures and the superintendent wants someone who has seen a fuel gas supply system trip at 0300. It is thinner at junior ranks, where owners are often willing to train, and it is thinner again on tonnage that has been in service long enough for procedures to stabilize.
There is also a portfolio effect. An engineer whose record shows LNG carrier time, then a dual-fuel container ship, then a methanol newbuild is not three times as valuable; but the combination signals adaptability across fuel systems, and that signal is what shore-based technical roles later pay for.
Positioning yourself without gas experience
The engineers who successfully cross over tend to follow a recognizable sequence:
- Complete IGF basic training as early as possible, ideally before being asked, so the certificate is already in the matrix when a request lands.
- Take any available contract on dual-fuel tonnage at a rank where owners accept training risk, even if it means a lateral move or a short-term step down in seniority.
- Build documented sea time, then upgrade to advanced IGF before moving for the senior billet.
- Keep bunker checklists, fuel system familiarization sign-offs, and any maker-specific training certificates; desks increasingly ask for evidence, not just endorsements.
Engine-room resource management courses and manufacturer familiarization courses add credibility, but sea time is the currency that clears charterer matrices. A second engineer with twelve documented months on X-DF machinery will beat a chief engineer with a folder of classroom certificates in most shortlisting exercises.
What this means for the next contract cycle
The structural driver is not going away. Decarbonization regulation and charterer pressure mean alternative-fuel tonnage keeps arriving regardless of freight cycles, and each delivery pulls experienced engineers out of the conventional pool, tightening both markets. Senior officers who treat dual-fuel competence as a career hedge rather than a specialization will find the option value compounds: it opens gas carriers, widens container and PCTC options, and builds the record that shore-side newbuild and superintendent roles increasingly require. The window in which an engineer can enter at a training rank and exit at a premium senior rank is open now; it will narrow as the pool matures.
